Newcastle Eagles maintained their stranglehold at the summit of the BBL Championship thanks to a 97-85 victory over the Everton Tigers at the Metro Radio Arena on Friday evening.

In a tight opening period, the Tigers held a slender lead at 20-22 going into the second quarter. The Eagles broke the game open midway through the period with a 15-0 tear, including six points from Charles Smith to take the score out to 41-30, and the home side held on for a 49-39 lead going in at the half.

The second half saw the Eagles continue to open up a commanding lead, and a 6-0 burst in the third period took the score out to 68-44.

The Tigers tried desperately to get themselves back into the game, and a 6-0 run of their own in the final stanza got them to within seven points at 76-69, but an Eagles immediately responded with an 8-3 tear to lead 84-72, and were able to hold on for the victory.

Eagles player-coach Fab Flournoy led all scorers with 22 points for the home side, while ex-Eagle Richard Midgley led the Tigers scorers with 21.
